FAQs

  • When do I meet initial eligibility for coverage under the Health and Welfare Plan?
    If you are a Painter/Taper, you become eligible for benefits under each plan on the first day of the month following the month during which you are credited with employer contributions for 325 or more hours of work. The 325 hours of work must occur within a period of no more than five consecutive months. In any event, you must wait 90 days from the date you are first employed by a Contributing Employer before you are eligible for benefits; your coverage will then begin on the first day of the following month.
  • What are the requirements for continuing eligibility?
    Once you are covered by these plans, you must continue to meet certain requirements to remain eligible for the benefits offered by each plan. If you are a Painter/Taper, you will continue to be eligible for benefits provided you are credited with contributions for 130 or more hours of work each month. In addition, you must continue to work in the industry within the jurisdiction of Painters District Council 1M. If you do not have 130 or more hours, you will lose coverage unless you have accumulated hours in your bank, or you continue to pay for coverage on an after-tax basis (contact Fund Office for more clarification.)
  • Are my Dependents eligible for coverage?
    Under the Health Care Plan, your eligible dependents include:
    • Your legal spouse as defined under federal law;
    • Your children under 26 (including natural children, adopted children, children legally placed for adoption and stepchildren);
    • Any other children under age 26 who live with you and for whom you are a legal guardian (as evidenced by a court order); and
    • A child for whom you are required to provide health coverage pursuant to a Qualified Medical Child Support Order
  • Do I have to provide proof of dependent status?
    Yes. You must provide a copy of your marriage certificate (not license) if you are enrolling your spouse, and the copy of the birth certificate, adoption papers, or other proof of dependency for any dependent children you are enrolling.
  • What if I enroll my spouse and we become divorced?
    You must provide a copy of the divorce decree. Coverage for your spouse will be terminated as of the date of the divorce stated in the decree. If a Qualified Domestic Relations Order is in place (for Pension), the trustees have established procedures to determine if it is acceptable to the Fund.
  • What about the future of the Pension Plan?
    The safety of the Pension Plan benefits is insured, within certain limitations, by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC).
  • How do I apply for a Pension Benefit?
    You can apply for a Pension Benefit by contacting the Pension Fund Office at least 30 days before you want to retire. You will be told how to apply for benefits. You will be asked to supply a copy of your birth certificate and if married, a copy of your spouse's birth certificate as well as your marriage certificate.
  • How do I protect my survivors should I die?
    The Pension Plan provides protection for your spouse or beneficiary. Different benefits and different rules apply depending on whether your death occurs before or after you begin receiving retirement benefits. Please contact the Pension Fund for further information.
